This is where the Get Info change is non-destructive: When you have two user accounts on your Mac and want to move a folder containing documents between the two user accounts, you can do so using the /Users/Shared folder which is accessible to all users on a system. There are posts on this forum and elsewhere from people who thought they were making a modest change in Get Info and suddenly found themselves without access to their files. And with any drive you do it to, you can end up locking yourself out of it entirely with difficult and arcane steps to make the drive accessible without losing all of your data. If you do it successfully to a Time Machine drive, it will never be good for backups again without erasing it and you will almost certainly not be able to restore a working system from it.

If you mess with permissions and propagate from the root of a boot drive, you will make it unbootable. There are dozens of invisible user accounts on your computer that need to 'own' various items in order for your computer to operate properly. Your user account is not meant to be the 'owner' of the entire contents of a drive.

Happy to defer to greater expertise, but why?
